What’s the difference between a DAM and PIM System?

Do you need a DAM system as a replacement for your PIM or to complement it?

Are you confused as to whether you need a Digital Assest Management (DAM) system as a replacement for your Product Information Management (PIM) or to complement it? Both have some functionality in common. But when utilised together, they create multiple value-adding benefits for your business.

If you are searching for a Digital Asset Management (DAM) solution, then it’s likely you have looked at some vendors already. Moreover, you’ve probably realised that different vendors provide different and similar features. So in what instances can a Product Information System (PIM) meet your business needs compared to using a DAM System? And can these systems augment each other?

The difference between DAM and PIM

The main difference is that Digital Asset Management can deal with all the digital assets that an organisation controls, whereas Product Information Management focuses on the lifecycle of a product and the information associated with it.

DAM vs PIm
Digital Asset Management helps you manage your company’s all video, image, and audio files in one place – from creation to consumption.

When do you need DAM?

The answer depends on the purpose. Unlike a PIM system, which is concerned with a product’s associated structured data, a DAM system deals with unstructured digital media assets such as images and video. Through metadata and tagging, a DAM indexes digital assets in a structured way so users can find the information they need.

A DAM is very useful when for example, marketing and sales departments need to collect and save branded material. With a DAM solution, the business gets a central storage location or “single point of truth” for the easy creation, reuse and updating of media files.

PIM systems are ideal for business verticals like retail and manufacturing, which need to aggregate large amounts of product information from various sources, and may have different Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) in their sales processes. A user interface will focus on the products model/part number.

Do you still need PIM system if you invest in DAM?

Many organisations usually find the best solution is to integrate their PIM with Digital Asset Management. If you only manage digital assets from your PIM, it will probably become strained over time. A PIM system might not always be able to handle the 1000s of digital assets such as video and audio files your teams may need access to in the future. In these cases, integration between a PIM and DAM would be the right solution.

PIM and DAM – A Winning Combination

The advantage of bringing in a Digital Asset Management system is that it will support all the organisations systems (Web, ERP, PIM, Marketing, etc.) by providing all the digital resources without duplicates (a single point of truth). The metadata also required to find something product specific that is already stored in the PIM and could be made use of by a DAM instead of reinventing the wheel. Automatic workflows can then connect media files with relevant information.

Combining DAM with PIM therefore clearly creates an opportunity to make single sources of truth for all product data and digital content. It allows you to create the information you need once, and then create consistent customer experiences on every channel.
